Edward Gwyn, born 1816 in London (England) - arrived in Hamilton about 1855
and Abner Caruthers Campbell, born 1824 in Hamilton were
partners in the gas works (Hamilton Gas Light & Coke Co.) and turned to the gun business in 1859.
During the Civil War they supplied carbines to the Union cavalry. Carbines sold by Cosmopolitan Arms Co. and those of Gwyn & Campbell, both in additional often marked and refered to as Union are quite identical but there are some differences. Especially the lever. The Cosmopolitan's guns were based on the patent of Henry Gross and Gwen & Cambell (see both for the patents). Edward Gwyn requested for an English patent for identical mechanism which was granted on December 20, 1859 (English patent is number 1489). Campbell brought the funds. Today it seems that both Gross and Gwen & Campbell has to be to consider as separate manufacturing to make similair or even identical products. Sorry when still melting information. I am not yet certain which was made by whome. It is not of help that in historic records both guns were often named as Union Carbines. .52 caliber percussion, single shot breech loading carbine, 20" round/octagonal barrel. Production about 8,500. These carbines were often marked in two lines UNION RIFLE on the right of the breech in front of the hammer and on the lock plate GWYN & CAMPBELL PATENTED, 1862, HAMILTON, O, in four lines. They would have been manufatured at the Cosmopolitan Arms Company, Hamilton, Ohio.
